a handmade birthday present

Today Charley was supposed to go to his first "real" birthday party. "Real" in that he was invited by a little boy in his class rather than a family friend.  Does that make sense?  Anyway, it was at a kid-friendly location in town, and all of his classmates were invited.  Due to his crazy cough, I didn't think going was a great way to make new friends. As I discussed yesterday, most parents aren't too keen on germy kids being out and about.  So we stayed home.  (Actually, we went back to the pediatrician because I needed grown up contact wanted to be sure that Will doesn't have pneumonia or an ear infection--if you'd spent last night with him you would be thinking the same thing.  He doesn't, FTR.)

I was bummed for the obvious "we're missing a birthday party" reason, as well as the fact that I would have known a bunch of people thanks to our school being right in our neighborhood.  But I was also sad because I made the birthday boy's present last week.  As in, I planned ahead and actually sewed something in time for the party!

Here's what we'll give him next week.  Don't you think this is a fun present?  It seems like bean bags wouldn't still be around if kids didn't like them, right?  I mean they're so throwable and 99% of the time parents wouldn't mind a projectile bean bag.  Plus, they have a gillion other uses.

Here's what I made the birthday boy.  After doing some online stalking sleuthing, I decided that an outdoorsy theme would work for this family.  The bag is the same kind I made a few weeks ago for my friend's kids.  I'm kind of obsessed with the basket woven fabric.

I figure that if he's really not into bean bags he could put cars in there, or acorns, or whatever he wants.

I also made another friends' kids bean bags in a sack.  She has three boys, so they need a bigger bag to hold all nine bean bags.

Here are all the bean bags for all the boys in a giant pile.  I had fun doing this.  Can you tell?  Our kitchen, for the record, looks like a bomb went off.  As long as there are tons of bean bags in this house, who cares, right?

Here are some fun bean bag ideas, in case all this promotion has gotten you excited.

p.s.  I shared this post on Plum and June's Monday Link-up, JAQS Studio's Made by Me and on Funky Polka Dot Giraffe's Too Cute Tuesday.  Go check out the other fun projects!!
